Fun Fact: When I was a science teacher, I got to experience a ride on the Weightless Flight of Discovery, Zero G!

What you like most about being the LSU PRS program coordinator: The best thing about this position is being a part of something that's building character and creating leaders in surgery for the near future.

Daniel Yoo, MD, MS

Additional Training: M.S, Pharmacology from the Tulane University School of Medicine

Areas of Interest: Microsurgery, Craniofacial, Hand

Hobbies: Working out, playing music (piano, guitar), art (drawing/painting), fly fishing, cooking, traveling

Fun Fact: I lack the ABCC11 gene which produces body odor.

What you like most about being at LSU for training: 1. It’s an incredibly well rounded program with exposure to diverse/complex reconstruction especially with micro. 2. The residents and faculty are very close/tight-knit. 3. Also, New Orleans.

Zachary Stern-Buchbinder, MD

Additional Training: Internship, General Surgery at the Mount Sinai Hospital (New York, NY)

Areas of Interest: Reconstructive surgery, hand surgery

Hobbies: Movies, tennis, drawing, traveling, reading, skiing

Fun Fact: Lived with five roommates in college, two of whom were chickens

What you like most about training at LSU : The New Orleans joie de vivre is legendary. Our LSU teaching faculty make patients whole again so they can get back to celebrating what makes life worth living. There's no better place to be training in plastic and reconstructive surgery!


FIFTH Year Residents PGY-5

Alexander Germann, MD

Hometown: Sedan, KS

Undergraduate: St. Olaf College (Northfield, MN)

Medical School:  University of Kansas School of Medicine (Kansas City, KS)

Additional Training: Former Combat Medic in the Army Reserves

Areas of Interest (in plastic surgery): I like it all so far, but I am leaning towards pediatric/craniofacial plastic surgery.

Hobbies: Making people laugh, reading and learning about history/anthropology and science related topics, traveling, camping/hiking, going to the gym, sports (Go Chiefs!), watching stand-up comedy, drawing/painting, playing guitar, listening to music.

Fun Fact: I played football in college where I was bestowed many nicknames such as The Golden Ox, Zander, Tum-2 (Short for Tum-Tum 2), and The Worst Show on Turf (the last one was my nickname for myself). 

What you like most about training at LSU : I like the fact that the PRS program provides a large gamut of opportunities within the field that I did not see at other programs I interviewed at such as head and neck recon, constant growth, and being trained by some of the best in the field, all in the setting of a really cool city with a unique culture. And Beignets.

Fun Fact: I’m growing 7 fruit trees in my backyard. Most are doing well…

What you like most about being at LSU for training: The love, close relationships, and trust I have developed with all my co-residents. I also love the support and autonomy from the faculty that is unmatched by anyone!

Adeem Nachabe, MD, MPH

Hobbies: Everything Tulane athletics, football, golfing, exercising, playing cards, trying new Chinese restaurants

Fun Fact: I once saw Drew Brees in Audubon Park on a run. I waved hello.

What you like most about being at LSU for training: I love the tight knit relationship we have among the residents and faculty. We have an immense amount of collegiality and support which fosters a great work and learning environment. We take our work seriously, but never take ourselves too seriously. That, along with taking care of patients from a city I love, makes LSU a special place to train.

Harel Schwartzberg, MD

Fun Fact: For four years I worked turning over ORs after surgery to help pay for college, now I operate in the same rooms I used to clean

What you like most about being at LSU for training: LSU is great because here you’ll be confronted with everything plastic surgery can throw at you from day 1. I saw this as a great opportunity because it would push me beyond what I expected of myself and make me the best surgeon I could be. As a home student, I was well aware of the character of my fellow residents and I knew that here I’d be surrounded by friends rather than coworkers which was important to me.

Patrick Palines, MD

Hobbies: Bird and animal watching, scuba diving, drawing/painting, watching movies, eating food

Fun Fact: I’m from Wisconsin but I hate cheese (GROSS!!!)

What you like most about being at LSU for training: As one of the most unique cities in the world, New Orleans offers a tremendously unique setting to learn plastic and reconstructive surgery. It’s also the place with the best co-residents and mentors in the world.

Hobbies: Netflix, rock climbing, graphic design, buying gag gifts and pulling pranks

Fun Fact: I wanted to be an art teacher when I was a kid.

What you like most about being at LSU for training: The faculty and residents here are all here for you and support you in every which way. Everyone is so approachable and I never feel nervous about asking anyone for help or advice. We are in constant communication with faculty and we go to happy hour together!

Rebecca Brantley, MD

Fun Fact: In medical school, I was voted most likely to overdose on coffee.

What you like most about being at LSU for training: The case volume, diversity/complexity of cases and autonomy is second to none, but the people are really what makes training at LSU so special. I haven’t met a more supportive and well-rounded group of co-residents and staff. I truly feel like joining a family and it makes coming to work every day that much more rewarding.

Mairin Guidry, MD

What you like most about being at LSU for training: I love the high volume of cases across a variety of hospitals and different subspecialties within Plastics (Craniofacial, Hand, Microsurgery, Reconstructive surgery), as well as the early operative experience. I’m also grateful to have such a wonderful support system in my co-residents and faculty who are always willing to teach and a constant source of mentorship and encouragement!


FIRST YEAr Residents PGY-1

Maggie Holohan, MD

Hometown: Chicago, IL

Undergraduate: University of Notre Dame (Notre Dame, IN)

Medical School: Indiana University School of Medicine (Indianapolis, IN)

Hobbies: Baking and cooking from scratch, working out, traveling (my twin sister lives in Hawaii), golf, tennis, skiing, Notre Dame football, and listening to music (esp. Taylor Swift)

Fun Fact: Before medical school, I completed a service-through-teaching gap year program. I got to teach 9th-12th grade science at a small school in Plaquemine, LA. It was during this time that I fell in love with the culture and people of Louisiana and knew I wanted to serve this population as part of my medical training. 

What you like most about being at LSU for training: The cases we see are as unique and exciting as the city of New Orleans itself. Our culture is supportive and close-knit, and our attendings want to see us succeed in being leaders in the field of plastic surgery. 

Mark Maier, MD

Hobbies: Cooking original recipes, Chess, Tennis, Hunting, Reading articles on random topics

Fun Fact: I learned how to drive a boat before a car.

What you like most about being at LSU for training: The city of New Orleans is rich in culture, friendship, and unique surgical cases. The plastic and reconstructive surgery program at LSU provides early opportunities for graduated autonomy, under the guidance of supportive co-residents and attendings, to pursue all clinical and research interests. I am proud to call this program home.
