Aesthetic Surgery

Aesthetic surgery is a critical part of the field of Plastic Surgery.  It involves treatment to improve the quality of life and is different from reconstructive surgery.   The patients must be approached differently and the relation between surgeon and patient is more complex.  The surgery itself is not simple, and a through grounding in reconstructive surgery prepares the resident or success in this demanding field.

Aesthetic surgery at LSU involves six-nine months of focused training.  Chief residents have six months of scheduled aesthetic surgery and junior residents are exposed to aesthetic surgery during our Plastic Surgery rotation in Baton Rouge.

Dr. Kamran Khoobehi, MD serves as Educational Director.  He has a large practice in aesthetic surgery in a sophisticated aesthetic environment, with multiple surgeons and aestheticians.

Our primary rotation site is in an accredited outpatient surgical center (Houma Outpatient Surgical Center), which is primarily an aesthetic surgery facility.

The resident spends at least two months in Dr. Khoobehi’s office. The resident works with Dr. Khoobehi and his associates they evaluate aesthetic consults and follow the patients to the final result.  The residents learn injection techniques, peels, and other adjuncts to aesthetic surgery. Dr. Khoobehi also provides exposure on how to run an aesthetic practice, which will be invaluable to residents. Residents also operate with other surgeons at Houma Outpatient.

LSU also has an aesthetic resident clinic.  This clinic, held weekly is devoted to resident aesthetic cases.  The clinic is supervised by Dr. Hammid Masshia, MD, who has more than 40 years experience in aesthetic surgery.

In this clinic, residents evaluate patients, formulate a treatment plan and actually do the procedures under supervision of the faculty.

The LUS Aesthetic fellow also works with the residents and are a good adjunct to residency training in aesthetic surgery.

During the Baton Rouge rotation, lower level residents are exposed to aesthetic surgery in the private practice environment.  Dr. Michael Hanemane, MD, who is a fellowship-trained aesthetic surgeon is the educational director.

Aesthetic surgery is an integral part of the core curriculum, and about 20% of the conferences pertain to aesthetic surgery.

LSU residents have historically reported a high number of aesthetic procedures, and graduates should feel well-qualified to build an aesthetic practice.
