anatomy and skills Laboratories

Much of surgery is based on anatomy.  We are fortunate to have the Center for Advanced Practice (CALS), a recently renovated state-of-the-art facility for surgical anatomy as well as gracious body donors.  The facility has 12 operating tables, AV equipment, and sophisticated instrumentation.  We normally have at least three whole day sessions: hand and upper extremity, head and neck, and trunk and lower extremity session.

Furthermore, a rotating array skill labs are hosted to teach specific skills. These include but are not limited to:

  1. Splinting workshop to teach appropriate splinting postion and fabrication

  2. Craniofacial plating done on plastic or cadaveric skulls with real hardware and equipment

  3. Microsurgery under both loupe and operative microscope magnification

  4. Distal radius plating and percutaneous pinning

  5. Virtual surgical planning using custom cutting guides and bending of reconstructive plates

  6. Orthoplastic local flaps
