UNIVERSITY MEDICAL CENTER - NEW ORLEANS
University Medical Center (UMC) is a new, modern replacement hospital for the old Charity Hospital. It opened in 2015 after an approximately $1.9 billion renovation.
The hospital occupies 4 square blocks ( 37 acres) of downtown New Orleans and is located across from the LSU Medical School and the new Veteran’s Administration Hospital.
It is managed by the Louisiana Children’s Health Corporation (LCMC) which also owns Children’s hospital and manages four acute care hospitals.
The hospital is 2.3 million square feet and has 446 acute care beds and 19 (soon to be 26) Operating rooms, including a brand new outpatient surgical facility. The ER has 56 Exam rooms.
The hospital houses the region’s only Level One trauma center (the Norman E McSwain Spirit of Charity Trauma Center), which has 2000 annual trauma admissions, with about 60% penetrating injuries.
The hospital has an accredited cancer program and has a high volume of breast, head and neck, and skin cancer patients. LSU Plastic Surgery is the only active plastic surgery program in the facility. Drs. Babineaux and Stanley currently serve as Service-Line Chiefs at UMC. Drs. Dupin, Boraski, and Womac also have weekly clinics at UMC and staff our complex recon cases.
A burn center (dedicated unit) was started in 2018, under the direction of Dr. Jeffery Carter, MD. It has 16 ICU beds and a rehabilitation center.
Veteran Affairs Hospital
Residents at LSU rotate through the Southeastern Louisiana Veteran’s Health System hospital in New Orleans. This recently completed hospital includes acute care hospital services (200 beds, ICU, MICU) and 6 operating rooms. There is attached a “Community Living Center” facility for long term care of VA patients.
Plastic Surgery has clinics twice weekly and has block time twice weekly. Primarily the service provides reconstructive plastic surgery, including chronic and acute surgical wound issues, pressure sores, post-bariatric body contouring and surgery of benign and malignant skin tumors.
The rotation is a one-on-one mentorship style rotation with our program director, Dr. Dupin. The resident experience emphasizes progressive responsibility both in the operating room and in surgical planning and postoperative care.
The service was initiated in December of 2019 and has grown rapidly. The hospital is located across the street from our major teaching hospital, UMC.

Our team of surgeons work hand in hand with the 40 pediatric specialty service lines at CHNOLA to deliver unparalleled care for the children of Louisiana. Dr. Mount, the service line chief at CHNOLA, Dr. Masoumy, Dr. King, and Dr. Lavie are full time faculty at CHNOLA. Dr. Stanley also provides expertise in congenital hand, brachial plexus and hand/extremity reconstruction. The service is well supported by clinical nurse coordinators, a PA, wound care nurse, and research coordinator. This allows rotating residents to focus their time on patient care, surgery, research, and optimizing their rotation experience.
Ochsner Baptist medical center
The Ochsner-Baptist Medical Center is located in Uptown New Orleans. This rotation offers exposure to a variety of Plastic Surgery procedures with an emphasis on microsurgical breast reconstruction.
